Academy of Math

At Bayhill we believe that all children can learn math and with regular practice and experience, every child can improve, meet their potential and enjoy mathematics!

Bayhill has used the highly acclaimed JUMP Math program since we opened our doors as a learning centre.  Our Academy of Math program is an expansion of the Jump program that has proved so successful from the very beginning. This world-renowned method of teaching math to elementary age students was designed by John Mighton, a mathematician and author from the University of Toronto.

Beginning in September, students from grades 1 to 6 will be able to attend weekly 75 minute classes that are grade specific. Our Academy of Math takes place after school and is divided into terms where students are able to register for individual terms that relate to specific concepts and skills or the entire school year, which will cover the 5 math strands in Ontario.

Mathematics in grades 1 to 6 is divided into 5 math strands. You will find these in the standard provincial report card for all students

The following are the 5 strands that we will be covering in our Math Academy:

 - Number Sense and Numeration
 - Measurement
 - Geometry and Spatial Sense
 - Patterning and Algebra
 - Data Management and Probability

Jump Math is both a philosophy and a set of materials and methods. Jump believes that all children in the regular school system can excel, even those diagnosed as having serious learning disabilities or who are failing in math. One of the key hurdles in reaching this goal is to overcome the math anxiety many of us learn. Mathematics, rather than being the most difficult subject, is one in which children can most easily succeed – even at a young age- and can thereby develop the confidence and cognitive abilities they need to excel in other subjects.
